In the onslaught of media coverage on unaccompanied children, accusations of children as disease-carriers emerged. Chicken-pox, lice, scabies, tuberculosis, and H1N1 topped the list of public health risks associated with an influx of young migrants. In spite of medical screenings and mandated vaccinations of migrants upon apprehension, headlines warned of an emerging “medical crisis.” The panics around youth as contagions serves not only to other young migrants but also to justify the sealing of national border.
